Like many authors, John Scalzi is often asked where his ideas come from.
“The ideas are not the problem. Ideas are super easy,” says Scalzi in this On the Fly interview recorded while the author was in Iowa City for the 2015 Iowa City Book Festival. The question he thinks folks should ask: “How do you filter the good ideas from the bad ideas?”
Scalzi, a prolific and award-winning science fiction writer and popular blogger, was first published in 2005. In the interview, he discusses his blogging (which predates his novels by a number of years) and why he believes many authors should resist being pressured into creating a social media presence.
He also discusses how the audiobook versions of his work have affected his style, the leeway he enjoys from his publisher, and the nature of “flow.”
