“Writing for me, I’ve figured it out, it’s obsessive compulsive disorder…It’s just something I have to do.”

F. Paul Wilson has put that compulsion to good use, penning 55 books over the course of his career. This On the Fly interview was recorded while Wilson was in Iowa City for the 2016 Iowa City Book Festival shortly after the publication of his novel Panacea.

Wilson, primarily a writer of horror and science fiction, is perhaps best known for his long-running Repairman Jack series, and in the interview he promises the character will return—but perhaps not on as aggressive a schedule as in the past.

He also discusses the mysterious forces at work in the background of many of his books, linking them to his own disbelief in the spiritual. “I’m a skeptic in search of transcendence,” he says.
