Sarah Bruni, a graduate of the University of Iowa, returned to Iowa City in 2013 for the Iowa City Book Festival. The author of The Night Gwen Stacy Died, who earned an MFA at Washington University in St. Louis, sat down for this On the Fly interview during that visit.

The Night Gwen Stacy Died borrows heavily from the world of comics, and Bruni discusses her deep dive into that world, which included reading the first 10 years of Spider-Man comics. She discusses why her tendency to be a “terrible eavesdropper” means she has to do her writing work at home. She also reflects on her interest in—and fear of—working in the first person in future work.
