Nancy Krulik didn’t pull a switcheroo when she came to Iowa City in 2013 for the One Book Two Book Children’s Literature Festival. She did just what you’d expect her to do: interacting with young readers and writers and encouraging their sense of wonder and possibility. She also made time to record this On the Fly interview.

She discusses the inspirations for some of her most famous creations, who preference for writing with music in the background, and her efforts to avoid overusing the word “stuff.” She cites Dr. Seuss, Judy Blume, F. Scott Fitzgerald, and Ernest Hemingway as inspirations and influences.

Krulik is the author of more than 100 books for children and young adults, including three New York Times bestsellers. She is best known as the author of the Katie Kazoo, Switcheroo series. Krulik is also author and creator of the George Brown Class Clown series, which follows the crazy adventures of Katie’s friend George, as well as the Magic Bone series.
